Originally constructed in 1956, this residence hall is located on a riverfront site on Rutgers University’s historic College Avenue campus. The building consists of six stories of dormitory rooms, an entry level (mostly open air) and two lower levels of classrooms.

The new work expands and encloses an existing open-air entry vestibule, transforming it into a vibrant, light and airy social hub with lounges, activity areas and a conference room. In enclosing the building’s podium with glass, views of the river are preserved as well as the intentions of the original architecture, which is that of a building raised above the ground plane.

This project involves the renovation of an existing 1960’s dining hall. The new work provides a range of dining experiences in an open layout that affords every occupant a view of nature beyond. Within the larger space are multiple dining spaces and a lounge with moveable seating and tables that is anchored by an open pit fireplace.

A period style diner that remains open until late evening is provided off the main entry vestibule.

Completing the design is a new outdoor plaza for dining al fresco.

Our charge was to establish the feasibility of renovating a two- story structure that formerly housed a catering hall and a police station
in to a mixed-use structure to serve as a main campus hub.

The new campus center will house a campus bookstore and café on the first levels with studio and classroom space for the college’s graphics design program above. The upper floors will be flexible with the ability to transform into a business conference center for the summer months.

The Hun School at Princeton is an academically and architecturally distinctive prep school located in Central New Jersey. For the design of its new athletic center, the School wanted a building that would continue its tradition of excellence and fit in with its existing campus- an academical village of gothic style buildings set in a greensward with some rolling hills.

The design of the building responds to three major considerations: Site, program and a strong existing architectural context.

The building is nestled into a steeply sloping site creating a three-story exposure on one side and 1 ½ stories on the other. This condition allowed the building to be organized around a three-story gallery space that has two entrances; one addressing the campus and one addressing the playing fields. The main program spaces are located off the gallery. There are two gyms situated at the building’s ends with locker rooms, fitness room and team rooms centrally located.

The building is clad in masonry and stucco and has steeply pitched roofs, in response to the existing campus architecture.

The childcare facility is designed with kids in mind, being highly graphic and designed with child-scaled spaces and equipment. But first and foremost, it is designed to teach children how to become future stewards of the environment.

The Jane H. Booker Learning Center is a building at the forefront of sustainable design and construction practices. Targeted for LEED Silver certification, the building combines low-tech principals of passive solar design with innovative modular building techniques, emerging technologies and sustainable materials, resulting in an ultra-efficient structure with a small carbon fooprint - a green machine for learning.

The building's architecture is, itself, a teaching tool that imparts valuable lessons about sustainability. It's siting, massing and materials are designed to take advantage of the local microclimate - harnessing the sun for passive heating, the prevailing winds for ventilation and north light for learning spaces. Its compact form reduces its impact on the site and thus on the planet. The interior spaces are awash in natural light and enlivened with rich color palette that also serves as a way-finding system, helping the children to locate their classrooms. The building's public spaces, the lobby and multipurpose room, are further animated with life-size wall murals that recall popular amusement park rides of the nearby Jersey Shore, tying the building to the larger campus. Surrounding the building is a series of outdoor spaces containing a boardwalk, sandbox and lawns that accomodate structured and non-structured activities.

Expanding and upgrading a library in the main academic building of this architecturally and academically distinctive prep school in central New Jersey presented many challenges.

Although the primary objective was to design a library for the 21st century, the building’s prominent location presented the opportunity to restate the School’s identity to enable it to remain distinctive among independent schools.

The library is situated on the upper level of two floors between two banks of classrooms. This area was revamped to house computer classrooms. The second phase is an addition that extends from the existing building down a dramatic slope to one arm of the classroom wing. This area contains additional library space and a faculty resource rooms.

Reading areas are accommodated in the curved element that extends over the hill to take advantage of views and natural light.

The new façade is constructed of tan brick with rounded edges and various coursing styles accented with chocolate-colored brick.

This project involved a complete reconstruction and addition to a traditional 1960’s dining hall to create a more contemporary food court style dining area. The 250-seat dining hall provides for many different dining options and transforms the’ vanilla box’ space into a light-filled volume with gathering spaces that can be used for catered meetings. The addition opens onto a new lounge for Poe Dormitory.
