Rutgers, The State University of NJ
Frelinghuysen Hall
New Brunswick, New Jersey
Size: 6,350 sf
Schedule: Completed 2008
Recognition: 2010 AS&U Educational Interior Showcase
Originally constructed in 1956, this residence hall is located on a riverfront site on Rutgers University’s historic College Avenue campus. The building consists of six stories of dormitory rooms, an entry level (mostly open air) and two lower levels of classrooms.
The new work expands and encloses an existing open-air entry vestibule, transforming it into a vibrant, light and airy social hub with lounges, activity areas and a conference room. In enclosing the building’s podium with glass, views of the river are preserved as well as the intentions of the original architecture, which is that of a building raised above the ground plane.
